In the realm of music there are few experiences as exciting as witnessing the birth of a collaborative masterpiece. For Nuzu Deep, the South African vocalist and dance artist known for her soul-stirring melodies, this thrill reached new heights with the inception of her latest project, “I Am One With The Universe.”
Born Future Mokoena on 29 March 1994, in Mganduzweni, Hazyview Mpumalanga, Nuzu Deep’s musical odyssey began at the tender age of 8 when she first discovered her passion for singing. Over the years, her love for music blossomed, leading her to explore the captivating world of deep house music at just 16 years old.
Despite initially harbouring dreams of becoming a pilot, financial constraints redirected Nuzu’s path, compelling her to pursue her musical aspirations with unwavering determination. From her humble beginnings in the studio, Nuzu’s talent and resilience soon propelled her to the forefront of the industry.
It took just three years for Nuzu’s reputation to soar internationally and the accolades to pour in. Throughout this, she remained grounded and guided by a dedicated commitment to her artistry.
When in the studio recording a track last year, Nuzu fell in love with the vocals but was not convinced that the producer felt them in the same way. It was at this moment that the perfect opportunity arose for her to use them in a new, innovative collaboration with WeAreIdyll Records.
The project was a competition in which I invited music producers from around the world to produce a version of one of my songs using my vocals,” Nuzu shares. “When I’m sent a beat, I let the beat tell me what it wants from me”,
so she hoped that her vocals would speak to the producers across the world in the same way. An open-call began and talented producers submitted their work for consideration. Young, hungry producers alongside seasoned, experienced ones formed over 150 applications.
It was incredible to see the diversity of styles and influences represented in the submissions,” Nuzu reflects. “Each producer brought their own unique perspective to the table”.
The result, a truly eclectic mix of tracks. The winners were carefully selected by Nuzu to create a fresh, musical masterpiece and the standard of entries was high. Nuzu acknowledged that there were some incredible beats sent in which were not shortlisted for this project because they inspired completely different vocals instead of complimenting the ones previewed.
For Nuzu, the competition was more than just a means to an end – it was an opportunity to connect with fellow artists, explore new musical horizons, and celebrate the universal language of music.
After meticulous engineering from Nuzu’s long-term producer Phakamile Ngwnya, a 13-track EP entitled “I Am One With The Universe” is ready for release. Dropping on Nuzu’s 29th birthday, the project encapsulates the musical subgenres of house that best resonates with her ‘soul’.
“I Am One With The Universe” is a sonic journey that transcends boundaries and genres. With each track carefully curated to showcase Nuzu’s mesmerising vocals against a backdrop of innovative production, the album is a testament to the power of connection and collective expression.
One of the standout features of the album is its ability to seamlessly blend Nuzu’s distinctive voice with a variety of production styles, from deep house to Afro-house and beyond. It’s a testament to her versatility as an artist and her willingness to push the boundaries of her craft.
